The 16th English Radio Drama Competition for Schools

Posted by Smart Education Charitable Foundation (Sep 29, 2023)

Would you like your students to write the play script of a radio programme, showcase their talents and perform a creative English Radio Drama LIVE in front of audience?

We are extremely proud to write to you and invite your school to participate in our 16th English Radio Drama Competition for Schools. Last year, over 500 teams participated in our Radio Drama Competition. We were overwhelmed by the positive responses from the participating schools. This year, we are extremely excited to inform you that the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) continues to sponsor our Radio Drama Competition, six years in a row! We also had to thank all the students that participated in last year’s competition!

Through this competition, your students will experience the magic of sound and the creativity of their voices. Students can learn and enjoy the fun of script-writing and acting; they can also develop team spirit, improve English language skills and build their confidence in expressing themselves in English. It will certainly be a marvelous learning experience for them.

The participants will be divided into two levels, primary and secondary. The shortlisted teams from each level will be invited to showcase their talents and perform their English Radio Drama LIVE. NO participation fee is needed in this competition, thanks to the generous support from our sponsors, including SCOLAR, Educational Testing Service (ETS), EF English Centers, KEA Learning International Ltd, etc. The final competition and prize-giving ceremony will tentatively be held in May 2024.

If you are interested in joining our Radio Drama Competition, please complete the enclosed application form, then either fax or email it to us at your earliest convenience. Participating teams can choose from the following themes for this year's radio drama competition:
  1. Pass the Baton
As time marches on, certain things in our city inevitably fade away, while others withstand the trial of time, by relying on the passing of the baton from one generation to the next. This passing of the baton extends beyond merely tangible skills and knowledge, but also beliefs, spirit and wisdom, which in turn forms the countless stories woven into the fabrics of our city. How do you interpret the term “Pass the Baton”? Express your thoughts through radio drama.
  2. Artificial Intelligence
With the rapid advancement of modern technology, accompanied by the emergence of artificial intelligence, we find ourselves contemplating the relationship between humanity and technology. How can society effectively incorporate artificial intelligence? How can we maximize the advantages of AI? At the same time, the threat of the possibility of AI replacing human labour looms in the back of our minds. In this era of accelerated technological development, how should we navigate through this unknown? Share your perspectives in the form of radio drama.
  3. Walking a Fine Line
In life, the smallest events can have the most significant impact. This event may seem inconsequential at the time, but may set off a series of events that change your life. For instance, you may decide to take the bus one day instead of the MTR, and end up meeting a stranger who becomes your best friend in life. Or, you decide to sign up for the school chess club just for fun, and end up being one of the best chess players in your school, going to chess tournaments and opening up new opportunities to explore. Looking back, what seemingly insignificant event changed your life? If you could, would you have done anything differently? Share your experiences in the form of radio drama.

Students will be inspired to practice and improve their English language learning skills, take pride in showcasing their talents in teams to create amazing radio drama programs! Smart Education Charitable Foundation has also established the Radio Drama Resources Center where students can get help on composing radio drama scripts, training voice and performing radio drama programs (please visit the following website for more details: https://bit.ly/smartdrama).

Students attending full-time schools in Hong Kong are eligible to enter the competition. Students can form a team of no more than 5 members and submit a 5-minute play script of a radio drama program with the above theme.
