The Final and Prize-giving Ceremony of the 14th English Radio Drama Competition for Schools, organized by Smart Education Charitable Foundation and sponsored by SCOLAR, was successfully held at the Chiang Chen Studio Theatre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on July 16 2022.

Thanks to the great support from principals, teachers, parents and students, the competition continues to receive very positive feedback and participation from schools.

The Results Announcement of the 14th English Radio Drama Competition

The Final and Prize-giving Ceremony of the 14th English Radio Drama Competition for Schools, organized by Smart Education Charitable Foundation and sponsored by SCOLAR, was successfully held at the Chiang Chen Studio Theatre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on July 16 2022.

11 teams (chosen from over 200 teams in the previous rounds of the competition) performed their radio drama LIVE in front of our judges and audience in the Final. Our judges were very impressed with each team’s excellent performance, as they all showcased their teamwork and creativity. There were three themes for this year’s competition. They are: 1) Our new normal, 2) In Uncharted Waters and 3) It’s the little things that count. This year’s competition is particularly challenging under the pandemic. We are grateful that our team and all our participants have worked through all the challenges and completed this year’s competition with a bang!

We hope that all of you have enjoyed the 14th English Radio Drama Competition for Schools, and look forward to your active participation again next year. Next year marks our 15th anniversary and we are planning some exciting activities to cerebrate such an important milestone. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors for their generosity.

Smart Education Charitable Foundation is excited to announce the winner of the Most Popular Performance Award of the 14th English Radio Drama Competition which gained the highest number of votes in the online voting event that had successfully taken place from June 21 to June 30, 2022 (12:00 noon) via our website! We highly appreciate the active participation of all voters in the voting period.

It is our pleasure to inform you that our judges have selected the finalists for the competition, and they have been invited to perform LIVE in front of our audience and panel of judges in the final and prize giving ceremony of The 14th English Radio Drama Competition for Schools in Hong Kong & Macau held at Chiang Chen Studio Theatre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on July 16, 2022.

You may now listen to the radio drama performances and may vote for your favourite radio drama from June 21 to June 30, 2022 (12:00 noon)! Each person can cast one vote per day for each level. The team from each level with the most number of votes will win the "Most Popular Performance" award. The Most Popular Performance Award will be announced in June 2022, and winners will be invited to the ceremony to receive their trophies.

Date:July 16, 2022 (Saturday)
Time: 9:00 to 13:00
Venue:Chiang Chen Studio Theatre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Important notes to finalists

1.Final Competition: Students should arrive no later than 9:15am to register. A briefing session will be given to all finalists from 9:30am to 10:00am. The final competition will commence at 10am.
2.Students are required to register pre-emptively for the rehearsal session and the final competition.
3.Students should also email us (Drama@MySmartABC.com) the sound effect files in mp3 format which they will be using during their drama performance before July 11, 2022. Please make sure to indicate your school name and group number in the email.
4.Students should wear proper school uniforms to participate in both the rehearsal and the final event.
5.Each team is responsible for playing and operating their own sound effects, cameras and volume during their performance.
6.Each team will have 1 minute to prepare and setup and have 5 minutes to perform.
7.Each team should finish the radio drama performance within 5 minutes. Once the allotted time is up, students must immediately stop performing.
8.Our panel of judges will evaluate each team’s radio drama performance in these areas:
Content20 marks
Use of articulations20 marks
Expressiveness20 marks
Voice projection20 marks
Team work and cooperation20 marks
Total:100 marks
9.To avoid disturbing the performance, students and audience are advised to remain muted throughout the competition.
10.Competition results rest on the final decision of the Judging Panel and organizer. entrants shall raise no objection. The decisions of the competition organizer on all aspects of this competition are final.
11.No entries, whether selected or not, will be returned.
12.Copyrights of the radio drama scripts, audio files submitted and performance during the final of this competition shall belong to Smart Education Charitable Foundation and they may be edited for publication, marketing and promotional purposes without limitations, further payment or notification.

Awards:

There will be Gold, Silver, Bronze and Merit Awards for each section. Best Performer and Most Popular Performance Award will be announced and awarded during the ceremony. Certificates will also be awarded to all the finalists.

Moreover, we would like to remind everyone that the voting period for your favourite radio drama performance will last from June 21 to June 30. The winners of each section will be invited to attend the final and receive their awards.

Smart Education successfully held the Script Writing and Voice Training Workshops for contestants of primary and secondary levels through Zoom on May 14. The workshops conducted by Mr. Kristopher Jordan, Center Education Manager in EF English Centers, provided valuable insights to our contestants on how to write narrative effectively and utilize voice acting and sound effects to improve the skills of storytelling and enhance emotional interpretation. Over 200 students and teachers joined the workshops!

Thanks to the support from principals, teachers, parents and students, the 14th English Radio Drama Competition has entered the second phase!

In order to help students master the techniques regarding script writing and production of radio drama more effectively, Smart Education Charitable Foundation is honoured to invite Mr. Kristopher Jordan, Center Education Manager in EF English Centers to host the workshop.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • All participating teams that enter the semi-final competition MUST attend the training workshop.
  • When teams join the training session on Zoom, please make sure you use your team number and school name as the participant’s name.

About the competition:
☆The 14th English Radio Drama Competition is organized by Smart Education Charitable Foundation.
☆This competition is also sponsored by (listed in no particular order) The Standing Committee on Language Education & Research (SCOLAR), ETS TOEIC, TOEFL Junior, TOEFL ITP, KEA Learning International Ltd., EF English Centers, NICI Asia Ltd. and Hoi Tin Tong.
☆The final competition and prize-giving ceremony are tentatively scheduled to be held on July 16, 2022.
☆Reminder: Semi-finalists must submit the 5-minute radio drama (in MP3 format) with the script to us ON OR BEFORE May 31, 2022. Files can be sent to us via email at Drama@MySmartABC.com.

Announcement of semi-finalists entering Phase 2!

Smart Education Charitable Foundation is excited to announce our Phase 1 results and the teams that can enter the next phase of the 14th English Radio Drama Competition!

This year we have a record-breaking number of teams participating and we are thrilled by the schools’ active participation in this competition! Moreover, entries from our students are in superb quality. To allow more students to gain valuable experience in the competition, we have decided to increase the number of shortlisted teams to more than 30 for each division!

We are honored to receive the support from principals, teachers, parents and students, and we certainly hope students can enjoy our competition under the new normal. Please note that teams entering Phase 2 of our competition will be invited to Workshop on Script Writing and Voice Training in May 2022 (date/time to be confirmed). We will send you the details once we have that confirmed. Please stay tuned!

In response to the latest development of the epidemic, the Hong Kong SAR Government has announced on February 22, 2022, that all kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, including international schools and special schools in Hong Kong will advance their summer holidays to March and April, and are expected to resume classes after the Easter break.

In view of the situation, we would like to give students more time to prepare work on the audio program, collaborate with their teammates and teachers when they return to school. Smart Education has adjusted the dates of the 14th English Radio Drama Competition as follows:

March 22: Announcement of the semi-finalists
May: Scriptwriting and voice training workshop for semi-finalists
May 31: Deadline for submission of semi-final competition recordings and scripts
June 17: Announcement of the finalists (5 teams in each of the primary school group and the middle school group)
July 16: The Finals of the 14th English Radio Drama Competition and Awards Ceremony

The 14th English Radio Drama Competition for Schools

Would you like your students to write the play script of a radio programme, showcase their talents and perform a creative English Radio Drama LIVE in front of audience?

We are extremely proud to write to you and invite your school to participatein our 14th English Radio Drama Competition for Schools. Last year, over 400 teams participated in our Radio Drama Competition. We were overwhelmed by the positive responses from the participating schools. This year, we are extremely excited to inform you that the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) continues to sponsor our Radio Drama Competition! We also had to thank all the students that participated in last year’s competition, despite all the difficulties we faced during the COVID-19 pandemic! We had our Radio Drama Competition online for the very first time!

Through this competition, your students will experience the magic of sound and the creativity of their voices. Students can learn and enjoy the fun of script-writing and acting; they can also develop team spirit, improve English language skills and build their confidence in expressing themselves in English. It will certainly be a marvelous learning experience for them.

The participants will be divided into two levels, primary and secondary. The shortlisted teams from each level will be invited to showcase their talents and perform their English Radio Drama LIVE. NO participation fee is needed in this competition, thanks to the generous support from our sponsors, including SCOLAR, Educational Testing Service (ETS), EF English Centers, KEA Learning International Ltd, etc. The final competition and prize-giving ceremony will tentatively be held in May 2022.

Participating teams can choose from the following themes for this year’s radio drama competition:
1. Our new normal
As the coronavirus pandemic has been sweeping across the world, we have entered into the era of “the new normal” without realising it. At present, masks and hand sanitisers have become the necessities for all of us. Students have to make use of online self-learning platforms, and people have to work from home and are advised to minimise social gatherings. Facing these various restrictions, how can people adapt to such new style of life through breakthroughs and innovations? Look back or ahead, create a radio drama about “the new normal” and share with us.
2. In Unchartered Waters
Have you ever pondered whether the “Peach Blossom Island” and the “Death Valley” mentioned in television dramas and those mysterious treasure caves appeared in games really exist? Have you tried to step out of your comfort zone to search for your inner self and explore the meaning of life? If you possess the desire to dive in uncharted waters, inspiration to create a new life and even determination to create a new world, please express your thoughts or ideas in this radio drama.
3. It’s the little things that count
Lu Xun, one of China’s greatest writers, wrote a piece of writing titled “A small incident” to praise a person of grassroots for his great nobility and reflect on the apathy and the suspicious mind of intellectuals at the time. Even though the story written by the author described a small incident, the incident had far-reaching implications for him. In your life, have your ever experienced some small incidents, however insignificant they may seem, which have profound impact on you? Create and share an interesting radio drama with us using your boundless creativity!

Students will be inspired to practice and improve their English language learning skills, take pride in showing off their expression in teams to create amazing radio drama programs!

ELIGIBILITY TO ENTER: Students attending full-time schools in Hong Kong or Macau are eligible to enter the competition. Students can form a team of no more than 5 members and submit a 5-minute play script of a radio drama program with the above theme. Teams will represent their school, and each school can have more than one team to participate. Each team can only submit one entry for the competition. Teams entering the second phase of the competition will be asked to record their radio drama program in mp3 format and submit to us before the deadline.

RULES AND REGULATIONS:
  1. Each team shall not submit more than one script.
  2. Teams must consist of no more than 5 students. Members of a team must be of the same level as listed.
  3. Any entries with obscene, violent, malicious or discriminatory elements or involving publicity of or advocating any persons or groups and illegal and unlawful act shall be disqualified.
  4. Play scripts must be of original content, and materials taken from pre-existing scripts by writers who are not part of the group are prohibited. Entrants who fail to comply will be disqualified.
  5. Entrants will be solely responsible for the content and any violations of copyright as a result of posting it.
  6. Entries will not be returned to the contestants.
  7. The organiser has the right to use, broadcast, share or re-use all entries of the competition.
  8. Participation in the competition will constitute the participants’ consent to the organiser’s use of the participants’ names, likeness, voices, opinions, photos, scripts, audio, video, performance and information for promotional purposes in any media, worldwide; or authorisation for other parties to use and edit the above materials for educational purposes or publicity, without further payment or notification.
  9. The organizer shall own the intellectual property rights of all entries.
  10. Extra certificates will not be given to any replacement members of a team.
  11. The decision of the adjudicators regarding the competition results shall be final. Entrants shall have no right to raise objections. The organiser reserves the right to make final decisions on all aspects of the competition.
