“Fifteen years” is a tradition that we all treasured and enjoyed.

“The next fifteen years” - we will continue to have a platform for all of you to shine!

The Final and Prize-giving Ceremony of the 15th English Radio Drama Competition for Schools, organized by Smart Education Charitable Foundation and sponsored by SCOLAR for the 5th consecutive year, were successfully held at the Chiang Chen Studio Theatre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on June 10 2023.

14 teams (chosen from over 500 teams in the previous rounds of the competition) performed their radio drama LIVE in front of our judges and audience in the Final. Our judges were very impressed with each team’s excellent performance, as they all showcased their teamwork and creativity. There were three themes for this year’s competition. They are: 1) Fifteen Years Later, 2) Our Metaverse and 3) Parting and Reunion. We are very proud of our team and all our participants, who worked through all the challenges and completed this year’s competition with a bang!

This is the 15th year that we hosted the Radio Drama Competition and we would like to take this opportunity to convey our deepest gratitude to all the schools, institutions, principals, teachers, students and parents who supported the event. The Radio Drama Competition aims to stimulate students’ personal development, cultivate their language skills and creativity, and spark their interest in learning and teach them the importance of teamwork.

It is our pleasure to inform you that our judges have selected the finalists for the competition, and they have been invited to perform LIVE in front of our audience and panel of judges in the final and prize giving ceremony of The 15th English Radio Drama Competition for Schools in Hong Kong & Macau held at Chiang Chen Studio Theatre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on June 10, 2023.

You may now listen to the radio drama performances and may vote for your favourite radio drama from May 4 to May 15, 2023 (12:00 noon)! Each person can cast one vote per day for each level. The team from each level with the most number of votes will win the "Most Popular Performance" award. The Most Popular Performance Award will be announced in June 2023, and winners will be invited to the ceremony to receive their trophies.

Date:June 10, 2023 (Saturday)
Time: 9:00 to 13:00
Venue:Chiang Chen Studio Theatre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Important notes to finalists

1.Final Competition: Students should arrive no later than 9:15am to register. A briefing session will be given to all finalists from 9:30am to 10:00am. The final competition will commence at 10am.
2.Students are required to register pre-emptively for the rehearsal session and the final competition.
3.Students should also email us (Drama@MySmartABC.com) the sound effect files in mp3 format which they will be using during their drama performance before May 31, 2023. Please make sure to indicate your school name and group number in the email.
4.Students should wear proper school uniforms to participate in both the rehearsal and the final event.
5.Each team is responsible for playing and operating their own sound effects, cameras and volume during their performance.
6.Each team will have 1 minute to prepare and setup and have 5 minutes to perform.
7.Each team should finish the radio drama performance within 5 minutes. Once the allotted time is up, students must immediately stop performing.
8.Our panel of judges will evaluate each team’s radio drama performance in these areas:
Content20 marks
Use of articulations20 marks
Expressiveness20 marks
Voice projection20 marks
Team work and cooperation20 marks
Total:100 marks
9.To avoid disturbing the performance, students and audience are advised to remain muted throughout the competition.
10.Competition results rest on the final decision of the Judging Panel and organizer. entrants shall raise no objection. The decisions of the competition organizer on all aspects of this competition are final.
11.No entries, whether selected or not, will be returned.
12.Copyrights of the radio drama scripts, audio files submitted and performance during the final of this competition shall belong to Smart Education Charitable Foundation and they may be edited for publication, marketing and promotional purposes without limitations, further payment or notification.

Awards:

There will be Gold, Silver, Bronze and Merit Awards for each section. Best Performer, Best Script Award and Most Popular Performance Award will be announced and awarded during the ceremony. Certificates will also be awarded to all the finalists.

Moreover, we would like to remind everyone that the voting period for your favourite radio drama performance will last from May 4 to May 15, 2023 (12:00 noon). The winners of each section will be invited to attend the final and receive their awards.

Smart Education Charitable Foundation hosted two Radio Drama workshops on April 13th via Zoom. The Workshops, conducted by Mr Alexander Colon from EF English Centers, gave insight on how to write narrative effectively, utilize voice acting and sound effects to boost storytelling and enhance emotional interpretation. Workshops on Script Writing and Voice/Sound Effects Training

Thanks to the support from principals, teachers, parents and students, the 15th English Radio Drama Competition has entered the second phase!

In order to help students master the techniques regarding script writing and production of radio drama more effectively, Smart Education Charitable Foundation is honoured to invite Mr. Alexander Colon, Native English Teacher from EF English Centers to host the workshop. All semi-finalists l are invited to attend our workshop on script writing and voice/sound effects training via Zoom. In view of the limit on the number of participants in a Zoom meeting, other students and teachers who are not able to join in the meeting via Zoom can attend the workshop via Facebook LIVE.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • All participating teams that enter the semi-final competition MUST attend the training workshop.
  • When teams join the training session on Zoom, please make sure you use your team number and school name as the participant’s name.

About the competition:
☆The 15th English Radio Drama Competition is organized by Smart Education Charitable Foundation.

Announcement of semi-finalists entering Phase 2!

Smart Education Charitable Foundation is excited to announce our Phase 1 results and the teams that can enter the next phase of the 15th English Radio Drama Competition!

This year we have a record-breaking number of teams participating and we are thrilled by the schools’ active participation in this competition! Moreover, entries from our students are in superb quality. To allow more students to gain valuable experience in the competition, we have decided to increase the number of shortlisted teams to over 50 for each division!

We are honored to receive the support from principals, teachers, parents and students, and we certainly hope students can enjoy our competition. Please note that teams entering Phase 2 of our competition will be invited to Workshop on Script Writing and Voice Training on 13 April, 2023(Primary Division: 4:00p.m. - 5:00p.m.; Secondary Division: 5:15p.m. - 6:15p.m.). We will send you the details once we have that confirmed. Please stay tuned!

We noticed that the works created by all the entrants are full of creativity and literary talent. In order to encourage students to make further breakthroughs in writing, this year's competition will add a "Best Script Writing Award" for each division.

The 15th English Radio Drama Competition for Schools

Would you like your students to write the play script of a radio programme, showcase their talents and perform a creative English Radio Drama LIVE in front of audience?

We are extremely proud to write to you and invite your school to participate in our 15th English Radio Drama Competition for Schools. Last year, over 400 teams participated in our Radio Drama Competition. We were overwhelmed by the positive responses from the participating schools. This year, we are extremely excited to inform you that the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) continues to sponsor our Radio Drama Competition! We also had to thank all the students that participated in last year's competition, despite all the difficulties we faced during the COVID-19 pandemic! We had our Radio Drama Competition online for the very first time!

Through this competition, your students will experience the magic of sound and the creativity of their voices. Students can learn and enjoy the fun of script-writing and acting; they can also develop team spirit, improve English language skills and build their confidence in expressing themselves in English. It will certainly be a marvelous learning experience for them.

The participants will be divided into two levels, primary and secondary. The shortlisted teams from each level will be invited to showcase their talents and perform their English Radio Drama LIVE. NO participation fee is needed in this competition, thanks to the generous support from our sponsors, including SCOLAR, Educational Testing Service (ETS), EF English Centers, KEA Learning International Ltd, etc. The final competition and prize-giving ceremony will tentatively be held in May 2023.

Participating teams can choose from the following themes for this year's radio drama competition:
1. Fifteen Years Later
Who can predict what will happen 15 years later? Where will you be? Will there be a lot of changes around you? What are your aspirations for the next 15 years? Create a radio drama program about “Fifteen years later” and share with us.
2. Our Metaverse
Metaverse is the next revolution of the internet where it is considered as an imaginary area without limits where we can meet people in virtual reality. In the virtual world, communication is no longer constrained by physical distance, and we can accomplish things that might be impossible in the physical world. Tell us more about your own "metaverse" in the form of radio drama with your boundless creativity.
3. Parting and Reunion
Many say “parting is for a better reunion in the future”. We have all experienced parting and reunion in our lives; they sometimes reflect our anticipation leading to greater happiness. Do you agree? Please express your thoughts or ideas in your radio drama program.

Students will be inspired to practice and improve their English language learning skills, take pride in showcasing their talents in teams to create amazing radio drama programs! Smart Education Charitable Foundation has also established the Radio Drama Resources Center where students can get help on composing radio drama scripts, training voice and performing radio drama programs (please visit the following website for more details: https://bit.ly/smartdrama).

ELIGIBILITY TO ENTER: Students attending full-time schools in Hong Kong or Macau are eligible to enter the competition. Students can form a team of no more than 5 members and submit a 5-minute play script of a radio drama program with the above theme. Teams will represent their school, and each school can have more than one team to participate. Each team can only submit one entry for the competition. Teams entering the second phase of the competition will be asked to record their radio drama program in mp3 format and submit to us before the deadline.

RULES AND REGULATIONS:
  1. Each team shall not submit more than one script.
  2. Teams must consist of no more than 5 students. Members of a team must be of the same level as listed.
  3. Any entries with obscene, violent, malicious or discriminatory elements or involving publicity of or advocating any persons or groups and illegal and unlawful act shall be disqualified.
  4. Play scripts must be of original content, and materials taken from pre-existing scripts by writers who are not part of the group are prohibited. Entrants who fail to comply will be disqualified.
  5. Entrants will be solely responsible for the content and any violations of copyright as a result of posting it.
  6. Entries will not be returned to the contestants.
  7. The organiser has the right to use, broadcast, share or re-use all entries of the competition.
  8. Participation in the competition will constitute the participants' consent to the organiser's use of the participants' names, likeness, voices, opinions, photos, scripts, audio, video, performance and information for promotional purposes in any media, worldwide; or authorisation for other parties to use and edit the above materials for educational purposes or publicity, without further payment or notification.
  9. The organizer shall own the intellectual property rights of all entries.
  10. Extra certificates will not be given to any replacement members of a team.
  11. The decision of the adjudicators regarding the competition results shall be final. Entrants shall have no right to raise objections. The organiser reserves the right to make final decisions on all aspects of the competition.
