About Our Radio Drama Competition

Would you like your students to write the play script of a radio programme, showcase their talents and perform a creative English Radio Drama LIVE in front of audience?

We are extremely proud to write to you and invite your school to participate in our 16th English Radio Drama Competition for Schools. Last year, over 500 teams participated in our Radio Drama Competition. We were overwhelmed by the positive responses from the participating schools. This year, we are extremely excited to inform you that the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) continues to sponsor our Radio Drama Competition, six years in a row! We also had to thank all the students that participated in last year's competition!

Through this competition, your students will experience the magic of sound and the creativity of their voices. Students can learn and enjoy the fun of script-writing and acting; they can also develop team spirit, improve English language skills and build their confidence in expressing themselves in English. It will certainly be a marvelous learning experience for them.

ELIGIBILITY TO ENTER:
Students attending full-time schools in Hong Kong or Macau are eligible to enter the competition. Students can form a team of no more than 5 members and submit a 5-minute play script of a radio drama program with the above theme. Teams will represent their school, and each school can have more than one team to participate. Each team can only submit one entry for the competition. Teams entering the second phase of the competition will be asked to record their radio drama program in mp3 format and submit to us before the deadline.

Themes and Topics

To provide students with greater opportunities to express their creativity and share their perspectives on significant issues, this year's radio drama competition includes themes such as “Chinese History and Culture”, "Personal Growth and Career Planning," "Information Technology and Social Development," "Sustainability and Life Attitude," and "Positive Values". Each theme includes a topic that allows participants to explore their creative focus.

Participating teams can choose from the following themes for this year's radio drama competition:

No. Theme Topic Description
1 Chinese History and Culture Junzi "A Junzi adopts justice as his essence, He actualizes it through propriety, demonstrates it in humility, develops it by truthfulness." "A Junzi enables the good wishes of others, not the bad ones. A petty man does just the reverse of this." "A Junzi is ashamed to let his words outrun his deeds." The concept of "Junzi" has long been regarded as the pinnacle of moral virtue in Chinese culture, serving as the cornerstone of ethical conduct and embodying the essence of Confucianism. What is your interpretation of Junzi morals? How should one embody the principles of a Junzi, and is it even necessary in the modern world? Please convey your insights on "Junzi" by spinning a compelling story for a radio drama play.
2 Personal Growth and Career Prospects The Courage to Take Responsibility From birth, we bear various responsibilities—to ourselves, our families, our friends, and society. Embracing these duties requires immense courage, and learning to take responsibility signifies a new chapter of growth. Have you ever encountered a situation that demanded your courage to accept responsibility? Why do you believe taking responsibility is vital? Please create a compelling radio drama play inspired by your reflections.
3 Information Technology and Social Development A Day Without Social Media Social media has become an integral part of many people's lives, creating an alternate reality where people are all connected through their sharing of experiences and access to the latest information, or disinformation. In time, our dependence on these media platforms has grown, with the unending "likes," "shares," and "comments" proving both captivating and addictive. Have you ever considered what life might be like without social media? How, if at all, would things be different? Explore this concept by crafting a radio drama play that depicts "A Day without Social Media."
4 Sustainability and Life Attitude Green Consumption "Green consumption" has emerged as a significant trend, incorporating environmental protection and conservation into daily habits to optimize resource use, minimize waste, and promote a beneficial, healthy lifestyle. By choosing "green products," we can avoid overconsumption and reduce environmental harm. What are your thoughts on this eco-friendly concept? How can it be effectively practiced? Are there any downsides to this trend? Share your insights through a thought-provoking radio drama play.
5 Positive Values Embracing Yourself We all experience anxiety at times, from feeling dissatisfied with our physical appearance, nervous about our academic or artistic performance or stressed from our social relationships. To confront anxiety, we must recognize our uniqueness, accept imperfections, embrace ourselves, and cherish who we are. Use "Embracing Yourself" as a theme to craft a moving radio drama play that explores these ideas.
